.) “The Big Short” – Important, funny, terrifying, hilarious, and scary as hell. Did I mention it’s pretty clever?

.) “It Follows” – This movie has the whole package; an amazing score, terrific cinematography and a clever screenplay.

.) “Mad Max: Fury Road” – Visually appealing and massively entertaining, this is technically groundbreaking stuff.

.) “Room” – Uncomfortable as all hell. This is a tour de force of filmmaking and acting.

.) “Tangerine” – “Tangerine” has an early 90′s indie movie charm that is unforgettable.

.) “The Hateful Eight” – More amazing Tarantino dialogue in a bloody mystery “who done it” only he can get away with.

.) “Anomalisa” – Haunting.

.) “The Revenant” – A gorgeous film to watch and a heart pounding experience.

.) ”Straight Outta Compton” – A searing and poignant biopic that was criminally overlooked at this year’s Oscars.

.) “Sicario” – The harsh realities and graphic loss of human life caused by the drug war all in one tense film. Scary stuff.

.) “Shaun the Sheep” – A child’s film with no dialogue but tons of magic. This is the perfect family film.

.) ”Inside Out” – Another hanky filled movie by Pixar with more heart than most live action films.

.) “Steve Jobs” – Genius performances and a fascinating character study. Also, it has Fassbender.

.) “Bridge of Spies” – Spielberg doing what he does best.

.) ”Spotlight” – A movie that needed to be made.

.) “Slow West” – A subtle and graphic modern western classic. Also, it has Fassbender.

.) “The Martian” – Sci-fi with a brain.

.) “Beasts of No Nation” – The ugliness of humanity played out by young child soldiers, not easy to watch.

.) “The Overnight” – Sophisticated taboo subject matter makes this one of the smartest most adult comedies in years.

.) “A Most Violent Year” – A mob movie done just right.

.) “Kingsman: The Secret Service” – A spy movie done right, with a laugh.

.) “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” – Fascinating to the point of obsession.

.) “Amy” – Depressing documentaries don’t get any more depressing than this.

.) “Trumbo” – An entertaining, relevant story of how fear crippled Hollywood at the beginning of the cold war.

.) “Dope” – 90′s nostalgia from a fresh new voice in cinema.
